The Duke had a jam New Year Eve here in Athens, Georgia. There was a little bit of everything going on at this jam: a bunny hop contest, flatland, hang five contest, manual contest, long jump, backflips, barflips, spine ramps, cops, rails, unicycles, Dads, ex girl friends dog, bar tending, a girl looking me straight in the eyes and asking me how you spell Dane, ATL crew, flat tires, and a beautiful sunset. Good way to spend the last day of 2011.

Florida is not a bad place to be in November. The weather is nice. The sun is out. There is a lot of beach. A plethora of CVSs. You know your from Florida when anything under 70 degrees feels chilly. A lot of people down south seem to talk a lot of trash about Florida. Like everyone in Florida is either old or a redneck. People always talk trash about their neighboring states for some reason. It's fine to have that attitude if you have been there and have had a bad time during your visit. But perhaps at the same time it is fun to trash talk on the things we like.

Andrew Wickham

Andrew Wickham grew up on the east coast and has moved around a lot. As far as we know he has lived in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Colorado, Tennessee, and Georgia. There might be some other places as well but you get the idea. The man likes to move. A lot of BMX riders out there love to travel but Andrew doesn't travel and come back home. He moves his home. Andrew recently started out on a new journey to live the dream in California.

The California dream is understood if you have ever been there. The place is amazing and full of possibilities. It's like the gold rush never ended really. Andrew is taking his standard means of transportation the Greyhound bus. Georgia to Colorado. Colorado to Portland. Portland to California. That's a long time in a bus with a million stops along the way and many bad bathrooms. The rest of this story is a compilation of text messages I have received from Andrew on the first leg of his journey to Denver.

Went up to NYC a couple of weekends ago with my friend from work. He was running the NYC Marathon for some reason. People will put their bodies through hell for Marathons. It was pure entertainment to go out in the city post race and see young people limping around like old men. It was very easy to tell who ran the race. It is a true physical and mental test that crazy people are into... Everyone has something like this to put themselves to the test.

Stayed in Jersey City and had fun times riding and eating bagels. Also not working for 4 days in a row is always ok with me. Rode with Brian Tunney and also filmed a few things while in town. If you love NYC but hate all the damn people you should stay in Jersey City and take the water taxi over to the city. Jersey City is a nice place except for all the damn helicopters (NYC's fault).

Shows are for showing off. Showing the crowd what you got. BMX is awesome to watch and most people will sit through a whole 45 minute show. That's impressive given the fact that most people can't hold a five minute conversation without looking at the phone. It's fun to entertain the masses with BMX trickery.

No Buffalos in Buffalo

Buffalo...hmmm Well it's part of the Rust Belt that covers a good portion of Michigan, Ohio, NY, and Indiana. Cities like Buffalo, Cleveland, and Detroit amongst several others were once major global manufacturing centers. Lots of steel and manly type things were made in these cities by a different generation of Americans. Much of the rust belt is viewed by outsiders as a bunch of crappy run down cities that are not worth visiting. These cities are worth visiting. Everywhere is worth visiting if you look at whats really there. Anywhere where hard working people live make for a great city.

Anyway the final round of the AM Flatland Circuit was held at a drag strip right next to I-90. Rain was in the forecast for the entire day and it was hit and miss. It ended up drying out for about half of the day. Some people had to ride in the wet while others got lucky and it dried up. Either way it proves that flatlanders will ride regardless of the conditions.

Flatland is so small and it's real easy to get to know everyone. Nevertheless it seems as if you do meet randoms at every event. Flatlanders live in caves or in homemade shacks and come out of the woodwork once in a while so you always bump into someone you have not seen in years or someone who is brand new to you.

July. Damn hot time for a BMX contest in the south east, but that’s what the Trans Am Jam was; a BMX contest held in the heart of downtown Charlotte, NC on July 30th.

I got out of bed really early and made the trip with The Duke, Austin, T.K., Russell, and Austin’s pop from Athens. People were sleeping in really uncomfortable positions in Dukes van. A true BMX trip.

Good times were had with lots of sweating from the 100 degree day. Had fun battling the heat and watching the ramp dudes go at it. People had pants on. I have no idea why anyone was wearing pants. It’s way to hot for pants people get some shorts.

Summer vacation is just about the best thing I can think of. Sun burns, swimming, sun glasses, long days, bikes, and a million other things are what take over your life when you’re on summer vacation. They are much better than the normal things that rule your life. Makes you feel like child again with no worries.

1100 miles is a long drive inside a car. The Same Thing Daily summer trip went from Georgia, up to the great state of Michigan, over to the home of flatland York, and then back down toGeorgia. It’s a long ways we checked. Being in a car for that long really gets you thinking about just about everything that’s ever happened to you.

York was good. Pit jams were killer. York is a small city a lot like many other small cities in theUSA. Weird things everywhere…people are weird, sites are weird, traffic patterns that make no sense, sun just beating down all day long, and toss in a bunch of flatlanders it’s like a match made in heaven. I can understand why flatland came from York PA. Flatland is weird.

The GA State Championship went down yesterday. Good little crowd came out to do some riding as the sun went down on a beautiful day in GA. The ATL was represented well as was Athens. Some dudes came down from Gainsville GA and even my pal from Knoxville came out to support this event. Big thanks to everyone who came out.

John from the ATL was doing some long rolling stuff as well as Jeff Foster. This is a spot that The Duke rides at a good bit so he was killing it. Andrew Wickam made the long 12 minute drive to the event to bust out a lot of his signature moves. A rod was also busting out. People were smiling, laughing, and having a good time.

The contest was an open jam style thing and Jeff Foster and The Duke walked away with the hardware. Congrats dudes. Thanks again to everyone who came. Next year...will you be the state champ?

Georgia is the best state for flatland in the USA. There I said it.

Pretty fun. The town doesn’t have much, but the BMX is fun.

I rode with Kevin more than Leif due to schedules. Kevin’s an awesome dude all around. If you didn’t know what he was to the sport you’d just think he was a bad ass who still shreds.

What do you see yourself doing down the road?

Hmmmmm… riding and cooking. Maybe release a pop album collaborated with a little know celebrity maybe you’ve heard of her…LADY GAGA!!!

How did you find flatland?

I couldn’t skateboard so I asked for a BMX bike. I got a Dyno Compe for Christmas, my hometown of Luray has a lot of flat parking lots.

Your job is cooking and has been since I have know you. Is it something you are passionate about?

It comes naturally and provides work where ever I am. Passionate?.. it’s fun and easy.

-You can have infinite fun with friends globally.

-I've ridden for about 20 years. I'll be ridin' 'til the casket dips or I no longer have fun...whichever comes first.

Duke, Andrew, and I did some tricks for a small event here in Athens, Georgia. Flatland is wild if you have never seen it. We rode on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and turned a few heads. Sometimes you just have to show off. Big ups to Andrew for organizing the whole thing.

Few places are actually something I would call a paradise. Well maybe that's not ture. Sometimes if I had a long day or something bed can be paradise. With all that aside there is a place in the north Georgia mountains hidden away with no cell phone reception I would call paradise. It's a flatland spot on a lake in the mountains conceted to a campground. This place is unreal. Andrew, Duke (aka Mr. Complain), myself, two dogs, and some lady friends made our way to this flatland paradise. Flatland can be done just about anywhere, don't forget that.

Some more photos from the great state of Texas. The Texas Flatland Round Up 6 was such a great time. The contest was held in a barn at a Texas BBQ cook off. Tons of people watched the contest and everyone had a good time. All the folks in Texas rule. Next year you should go to this event. It's the best.

My big theory on Texas for a long time is that it's way to big. Once you drive or fly into Texas it will take you a long time to get out. Texas is the second biggest state and also has the second largest population of any state. If you think about the cities in Texas...Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin they all are large cities. Most states only have one or two big cities and Texas has 4. I'm not sure what I'm trying to get at here, but there is a lot to Texas. One could spend there whole life exploring this state and still not understand much or anything. I took a trip to the lone star state of Texas for the Texas Flatland Round Up 6 to get a taste of Texas and this is what I came up with.

Growing up I don't remember seeing many females who were into BMX. Today things are a little different there are many females riding BMX all over the place including Austria. I meet IriNa Sadovnik while I was staying in Vienna this summer. She is by far the best female flatlander I have ever meet. She has good tricks that a lot of boys can't do. Her style is unique and she does not let the boys intimidate her. I asked her some questions and what not....

Dénes Katona is one bad mother. This Hugarian born flatlander takes simple concepts and puts his own twist on them and creats something very specail. I’m sure all you interneters have seen Dénes’s web videos and know what I’m talking about. Dénes is pushing his flatland in his own direction and it’s amazing to see. Dénes is extremely humble and a very big fan of flatland. At the OG Games (where I met him for the first time) when he was not riding he was always watching everyone. You can tell he really loves riding and everything about it. Here are some questions I asked him…

Where do you live?
I live in north-east Hungary, Sátoraljaújhely, but I study in Debrecen.

How did you get into flatland?
One of my freind started flat earlier and got me into riding, that was 8 years ago.

Who do you ride with?
If i am at home, I ride with Gábor Pásztor and the local beginner riders, who are so motivated and talented, too. But, if I am in Debrecen on weekdays I ride with Attila Joda Berecki, Sándor Tátray, László Tivadar, Péter Sepy Szabolcsi, Mihály Suba, Norbert Lego Kiss.

Outside of riding what do you do and what do you like to do?
This is my final semester at the Univercity of Debrecen as a technical manager. I still don't know what I want to do. Maybe I learn 2 more years at the university or I try to find a job somewhere in the world.

Your real fast runner. You won the Same Thing Daily 400 meter race at the OG games this year. Did you ever think about being a runner?
I played football before I started flatland. I loved it and I ran a lot that time. To tell you the truth, I started riding, because I felt that i couldn’t be as good as a football player or runner, but I knew, that one day I will have good chance on the Same Thing Daily runner race.

How do you come up with new tricks?
While I’m riding, I create my new tricks. I always try to be a little bit „original”. I like tricks never done before.

What do you want to accomplish with flatland?
I would like to learn a few more rolling/whiplash combes and record it and show to the world. That would be a pleasure for me, if I can give motivation to the next generation and get the rolling tricks into fashion again.

Why do you ride?
Beacuse the flatland is magic. I cant write that feeling that i feel when I pull a new trick or link for me and never done before.

How did you get hooked up with the OG crew?
About 4 year ago they offered me to support, when my frame, bar and fork were broken. By the time my support went into sponsorship, so today i havn’t got problems with bike parts. Thanks OG Bike! (www.original-gypsy.com)

Who are some of your favorite riders?
Chad DeGroot, Simon O’Brein, Ross Smith, Dan Rigby, Kerry Gatt, Dylan Worsley, Alexis Desolneux, Kevin Jones, Chase Gouin, Márton Szilágyi, Martti Kuoppa and the local beginner rider.

What do you eat for breakfast?
Hungarian bacon with hungarian bread and tomato.

If you could go one place where would it be?
I really don’t care, just one thing is important for me: finding a place with love and peace, but no money.
